Students With Aspirations to Teach (SWAT): Guidelines
“A unique program for Monash University medical students that fosters the pursuit of excellence”
Students:
- The program is available to all Monash University medical students throughout the academic year.
Students may access the program if they require assistance with a particular topic or wish to become more proficient in a given field through further teaching.
- Access is gained by visiting the database on the MUMUS website, selecting an appropriate tutor (based on their teaching specialty) and then making e-mail contact with that individual to arrange a tutorial on a specified topic.
- It is recommended that students contact tutors at their own clinical site so that the tutorial venue is convenient for both parties. If this is not possible however, a venue will be chosen at the discretion of the tutor.
- Tutorials may involve individual and/or groups of students.
- Appropriate behaviour is expected at all times (the Faculty’s Code of Conduct applies).
- Please notify the tutor at least 24 hours in advance if you are unable to attend a tutorial.
Tutors:
- Enthusiastic and dedicated senior medical students volunteering their time in order to help others consolidate their knowledge.
- Tutors provide their details (name, e-mail address, clinical sites, teaching specialty) for publication on the MUMUS webpage.
- There is no specified time commitment and tutors may refuse tutorial requests.
- Referrals can be made between tutors, for example if they are unavailable, their current workload is too great or another tutor is considered more knowledgeable about a particular topic.
- In making themselves available to the program however, it is expected that tutors will, at the very least, reply to student e-mails and make appropriate referrals.
- Whilst students will select the tutorial topic, tutorial content is at the discretion of the tutor.
- Reputable sources of information should be used, for example recommended MBBS textbooks.
- Appropriate behaviour is expected at all times (the Faculty’s Code of Conduct applies).
- Please be punctual and prepared, and notify students at least 24 hours in advance if you are unable to make the tutorial.
